Pansori is a traditional South Korean form of storytelling, operatic in style, that relies on the authenticity, intensity and power of the singer’s voice to express stories of love, death, tradition, honor. A perfect performance does not strive for purity or perfection of voice; rather it embraces all sides of the human experience. One of pansori’s virtuosos is Ahn Sook Sun, a living legend in Korea’s cultural history. For Ahn, the only way of mastering the ancient art is for each singer to build her own authentic sound. UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: 🤍 Description: Pansori is a genre of musical storytelling performed by a vocalist and a drummer.This popular tradition, characterized by expressive singing, stylized speech, a repertory of narratives and gesture, embraces both elite and folk culture. During performances lasting up to eight hours, a male or female singer, accompanied by a single barrel drum, improvises on texts that combine rural and erudite literary expressions. The term Pansori is derived from the Korean words pan, meaning a place where many people gather, and sori meaning song. Pansori originated in south-west Korea in the seventeenth century, probably as a new expression of the narrative songs of shamans. It remained an oral tradition among the common people until the late nineteenth century, by which time it acquired more sophisticated literary content and enjoyed considerable popularity among the urban elite. The settings, characters and situations that make up the Pansori universe are rooted in the Korea of the Joseon period (1392-1910). Pansori singers undergo long and rigorous training to master the wide range of distinct vocal timbres and to memorize the complex repertories. Many virtuosos have developed personal interpretive styles and are renowned for their particular manner of performing specific episodes. Threatened by Koreas rapid modernization, Pansori was designated a National Intangible Cultural Property in 1964. This measure spurred generous institutional support, which in turn fostered the revival of this tradition. Although Pansori remains one of the most prominent genres among traditional stage arts, it has lost much of its original spontaneous character. Ironically, this recent evolution is a direct result of the preservation process itself, for improvisation is tending to be stifled by the increasing number of written texts. Indeed, few singers nowadays can successfully improvise, and contemporary audiences are less receptive to the impromptu creativity and language of traditional Pansori. Country(ies): Republic of Korea
Pansori narrative singing is the representative Korean vocal genre. In pansori, one singer delivers an epic story accompanied by one drummer, the gosu, The songs are an amalgam of poetic, dramatic, narrative, vocal, and musical elements. Five stories have survived until today, among them “Simgcheongga,” the story of the young maiden Sim Cheong and her father Blind Sim. Sim Cheong is a devoted daughter who becomes a sacrifice to the God of the Sea and jumps into the water at Indangsu in the hope of having her father’s blindness cured. Under the sea, the Dragon King is deeply moved by Sim-cheong’s filial piety and brings her back to life as a queen, and finally her father regains his sight. The scene of Blind Sim regaining his sight is the final scene set in a happy tone, removing all the sadness that had permeated the piece. 🤍 Pansori, a traditional Korean musical genre, is sometimes compared to American blues music because its subject matter often involves the issues of everyday people. During the Joseon Dynasty, music was strictly reserved for the aristocratic elite. At that time instruments were highly prized items that lower class people could not afford. In Pansori ones whole body is the instrument. The singer produces a unique sound that can be found in no other genre. We had the privilege of sitting in on a practice session. Changgeuk (Korean classical opera) is a variation of Pansori. Unlike a Pansori singer who plays multiple roles, each Changgeuk singer plays only one character in a story. A scene from film Sopyonje (서편제, 西便制, Japanese title: 風の丘を越えて―西便制（ソピョンジェ)) by director Im Kwon-taek. 🤍 The piece sang here is from Shimcheongjeon (a tale of filial piety of a dutiful daughter). Pansori style singing in this film is meant to express Korean people's "han" (恨, lamentation). Lamentation about the division of Korea would also fit this mould. 🤍 North Korea would have maintained more traditional form of music than South. But, in South Korea, despite the explosion of K-pop style music in which little of "traditional Koreanness" is found, there are also people like film director Im who explores what may be called "Korean spirit." Not everyone may agree that "han" is at least an aspect or element of "Korean spirit." But that is what I feel. But having used the term "Korean spirit" to refer to "han", I cannot help noticing the contrast between "Korean spirit" and "Japanese spirit." In "Japanese spirit", one senses a certain agressiveness: it is a fighting spirit. In "han", one finds grief and lamentation, a sort of victim consciousness, the kind Japanese feel for being the only victim of atomic bombs. I wonder whether "han" will ever cease to characterize the spirit of Korea.

Gayageum Byeongchang means a performance both with singing and playing the Gayageum. And the name of this song is 「Kisaeng Jeomgo」. There were lots of official Kisaengs in Joseon Dynasty, so local rulers had to call the Kisaengs' roll. This procedure is called Jeomgo, and this song is describing it very funny.
